Chapter Seventeen
Indigo
The next morning, Ryan’s already started a fire and coffee and is working on eggs and bacon when I finally get out of the tent. It’s cold enough to see our breath, and I’ve got on all my extra layers.
“There’s an extra jacket in the tent for you, Indy,” he tells me.
I don’t hesitate to grab the down jacket with a hood and slide that on top. It goes to my knees but I like being in Ryan’s clothes.
I’m a little uncertain how to act when I approach him. He hands me a mug of tea and as I reach for it he leans in for a sweet kiss on the lips before allowing me to take the mug. “Sleep okay?” he asks.
“Yeah. You?”
“I had to get up a couple times to fight off a bear and a mountain lion trying to eat us, but otherwise it was a good night.” He winks at me and I roll my eyes at his attempt to make fun of my wildlife fears.
Ryan sits down on a camp chair by the fire and pulls me onto his lap.
“Hey, I hope last night answered your question about where we stand.” Ryan’s eyes meet mine, demanding an answer.
I grin and nod. “Think so.”
He raises his eyebrows. “You think so?”
I shrug and feign boredom, looking away. “I might need some clarification at some point.” I squirm suggestively in his lap and he lets out a half-chuckle, half-groan.
“I think I can provide that kind of clarification for you.”
He starts to trail his hands up my hips and under my shirt when I catch a movement from Lexi and Brax’s tent. Turning, I find Lexi and Brax looking at us with huge round eyes. For a moment I think it’s surprise at me being on Ryan’s lap. But then they point behind us, Lexi mouthing, “Look,” and Brax, “Moose.”
Slowly, Ryan and I turn our heads. Sure enough, about twenty feet away, a moose is standing statue still. Looking right back at us. Holding our gaze.
I stay frozen on Ryan’s lap. No one moves. My eyes dart around, looking for other moose, but I stay as still as possible. She seems to be alone. I can hear my heart pounding and feel Ryan’s hands on the bare skin around my rib cage.
After what must be several minutes, the moose starts to slowly walk away, and Ryan and I both let out a breath, quickly glancing at each other with wide eyes before returning our gazes to the retreating animal. There’s a snapping branch somewhere in the woods and birds calling, and then the moose picks up its pace, trotting until it disappears from sight.
“That just happened,” I say, the first to break the silence.
“I think the eggs might have burned,” Ryan says, also apparently in shock.
Lexi bounces over to us, unable to contain her excitement as she replays what went down.
As we marvel over the moose sighting and make another round of eggs, neither Lexi or Brax seems fazed that Ryan and I are acting all couple-y.
